An intriguing exploration of the Cherem d’Rabbeinu Gershom, its historical origins, halachic foundations, and the circumstances under which exceptions may be permitted. The discussion will examine the prohibitions against marrying a second wife and divorcing a wife against her will, the complex process of obtaining a Heter Me’ah Rabbanim, and the differing opinions of leading poskim throughout the generations. When is the ban absolute, when can exceptions apply, and who has the authority to permit them?
