CORRECTION: The explanation given for matzeiva here follows the opinion of Rashi. The Rambam however understands it as a stucture made up of one or many stones, not used for sacrificial purposes, but as a gathering place for worship. The Torah forbids to create such a stucture outside of the Bais Hamikdash even to serve Hashem.
